The power of paint: transforming your home with (or without) colour.

paint colours on the Sunshine Coast

In this blog, we're covering one of our favourite topics: paint! More specifically, how to choose the perfect paint colours for your home.

Choosing colours for your home interior might seem a little daunting at first, especially considering the multitude of options out there. But fear not! In true Whala style, we’re here to simplify things for you and help you make colour choices for your home interior that you'll love for years to come.

The order of selection

The first thing to know is that it's much easier to match paint to fixtures and decor than to find decor and fixtures to match paint colours that have already been locked in. With thousands of paint colours available, and the ability to tweak paint colours if you need to, it's a smart move to leave paint selections until last. Choose everything else, and it will make choosing the right colours for your house much easier.

Using neutral colours

Those that love colour, and don’t plan on selling their home anytime soon, may choose to use bold colours on some of their walls. But in the vast majority of cases, neutral walls are the way to go. Neutral shades are like the reliable best friends of the colour world – they get along with almost everyone! They focus attention on furniture and accent pieces, allowing for easy swaps of seasonal decor. And for those thinking that neutral = boring, you’ll soon realise that a vast variety of colour exists within the neutral spectrum. All neutral colours are either warm or cool, and all have different undertones that need to be considered.

But how do you choose the right paint colours?

But how do you choose the right paint colours? The absolute number one tip for selecting perfect paint colours for your home, is to bring the samples home! Trying to select the right tones at the paint store underneath fluro lighting and with no other reference is almost impossible. You absolutely have to bring the samples back to wherever they will be applied. It’s also beneficial to observe them in your space at different times of the day. You'd be amazed at how different a colour can look under morning sunlight compared to under your down lights in the evening.

You should also always consider your choices holistically. It’s not wise to isolate your colours, as each colour will influence the colours around it. When you’re creating a palette, a good rule of thumb is this; Choose 1 x white

Choose 1 x neutral

And choose 3 x other colours.

This framework will allow you to easily create an entire colour scheme for your home. For those who are simply repainting, or only partially renovating a house, some of these selections will already exist.

And remember, these are not strictly paint colours. These include colours that feature in general, such as tapware, tiles, and other finishings.

White is white, right?

The last topic to cover off on is Whites. Almost all whites are not pure. Just like neutrals, there are many to choose from, and each will have an undertone. This is very important, as the undertone will become very evident once the colour has been applied to your interior.

There are a few ways to identify the undertones in white paint;

  • Look at the bottom of the swatch, the darkest colour. You’ll be able to easily see the colour that exists deep within.

  • Compare your swatch to a piece of white paper. White paper is true white, so comparing your paint sample to it will give you a good indication of the undertone.

  • You can also compare your sample to other elements, such as bold colours, or fixtures and fittings in your home. This strategy is less about identifying the undertone, and more so used to confirm your colour selections are suitable.
