Six stunning tiled splashback ideas; Sunshine Coast tilers share their tips.

Herringbone tiled splashback

Many of us agree that the kitchen is the heart of the home, and one of the most critical elements of a beautiful kitchen is the splashback.

Today, we’re diving into the fabulous world of splashbacks – one of the unsung heroes of interior design. A kitchen splashback can be timeless and subtle, or a bold expression that is the talking point of the entire kitchen!

You’ll find many splashbacks on the Sunshine Coast that are bright and bold, and with colours not seen elsewhere throughout the home. While this style isn’t something we’re overly fond of, it’s a testament to the role the kitchen splashback can play, and what it can do for your home interior design. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Does a kitchen need a tiled splashback?

Absolutely. You won’t find many homes without a splashback on the Sunshine Coast. At the absolute minimum, there should be something behind the cooktop. Splashbacks are not only a design element, they are practical. They protect the walls from heat, oil, water, and anything else getting splashed around your kitchen… see what we did there?

We love tiles!

While there are a few different options for a kitchen splashback, tiles are our favourite. Tiled splashbacks are cost-effective, practical, and some of the modern options are quite literally stunning. There isn’t a more timeless kitchen splashback option than a neutral tile, and don’t believe any glaziers who tell you otherwise (glass is another option).

The different shapes and styles of tiles available now are almost endless, and it’s easy to spend hours looking at samples. To give you a head start in getting your head around it all, we’ve prepared a list of six of the most popular choices, confirmed by some of the best tilers on the Sunshine Coast.

Subway Tiles:

Classic and timeless, subway tiles are the little black dress of the kitchen world – you simply can’t go wrong. Subway tiles are rectangular, and usually made of ceramic. Typically subway tiles are installed horizontally on a 50% offset, however they can also be installed aligned for a more minimal finish. We’re also seeing subway tiles installed vertically with and without an offset, and we are absolutely here for it!

Kit Kat Tiles:

Resembling the beloved chocolate bar, these thin rectangular tiles add visual texture and depth, without overwhelming the space. Moreso a feature than the subway tile option, but still very subtle. Kit Kat tiles come in sheets, are in most cases installed vertically, and are a very popular choice for splashbacks on the Sunshine Coast.

Herringbone Pattern Tiles:

The herringbone pattern is where style meets sophistication. The herringbone tile pattern can best be described as a zigzag arrangement. It is extremely popular at the moment, especially in high-end homes, and not just for splashbacks. It is becoming more common to have large floor tiles installed in a herringbone pattern, and the best tilers on the Sunshine Coast are up for the challenge!

Feather Tiles:

Feather tiles are interlocking shaped tiles with subtle shade variations and a wavy surface. They create a modern and contemporary look - perfect for those who love the artisanal touch. Feather tiles add a subtle element of curvature, and can compliment archways or other curvature that is used throughout your home.

Penny Round Tiles:

Like a sprinkle of confetti, penny round tiles are small, versatile, and oh-so-charming. With an array of colours and shapes to choose from, there's no end to what you can create. Unique patterns, and even words can be created using penny tiles.

Encaustic Tiles:

Bold and beautiful, encaustic tiles are for the adventurous at heart. Encaustic tiles have patterns created out of multiple colours. When installed, the patterns from each tile will line up with the pattern on the tile adjacent. They can add character to any space, and are sure to be a conversation starter.

Let there be light!

Once you’re set on the colour and style for your splashback, the next consideration is lighting. While specific splashback lighting is not a requisite, clever lighting can really elevate the aesthetic. An LED strip light can showcase the colour and texture of your new feature, and is quite easily installed with minimal disruption. A Whala Pro Electrician is your best course of action if you’d like to explore different lighting options for your splashback.

Measuring your splashback

Estimating the quantity of tiles required for your kitchen splashback is very easy. Measure the length and height of any walls that require the tiles, and mark them down on a simple diagram. Photos can also be very helpful to the tile retailers in the estimation process.

There is also the option of using our Whala Pro Tilers Call out and Quote service. A Whala Pro Tiler will ensure that you’re purchasing the perfect amount for your kitchen, and that what you’re purchasing is suitable for your overall aesthetic. Involving your Sunshine Coast tiler early in the process certainly has its benefits, including minimising waste, and being able to discuss the position of grout lines and cut tiles.
